"This was one of my very first paintings when I arrived in India. I worked on the bed in a zero-star hotel room. I was fascinated by Indian people and their color. I felt that they, too, were very curious about me. At first, I didn’t want to step out of the guesthouse because I felt everyone was looking at me, and that I was too white. Over time, I got used to it."
