"Women with Butterflies"

"I painted this piece a few months after arriving in India. It depicts women holding hands, arms raised to the sky, with chains around their ankles. I was in Kerala, in the south of the country. They say it’s one of the most progressive Indian states in terms of women’s rights, because it was once communist. But I didn’t have that feeling."
